Bizanga Receives Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Technology Award in the Field of E-mail Firewalls
London, UK – 24th October, 2006 - Frost & Sullivan bestows the 2006 Excellence in Technology Award on Bizanga in recognition of its development of the Intelligent Message Processor (IMP) in the field of E-mail firewalls. In presenting this award, Frost & Sullivan commends the company’s outstanding efforts in creating a scalable message handling system with a protocol agnostic design.
The IMP is a design breakthrough in multiprotocol messaging built without open source packages. The appliance’s firmware, OvernetOS®(OOS), is based on a modified version of a hardened Linux kernel. The firmware can handle more than 1,600 E-mails per second even with the integrated antivirus, antispam, antiphishing, corporate compliance and encryption technologies.
“To achieve this high throughput, core components of the system had to be re-implemented, including memory management, process control, buffered disk and network I/O,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Vedavalli Rangan. “Complete re-implementation and tight integration of the message transport and handling protocols maximised performance while minimizing downtime. It also increased the throughput to over five million messages per hour per IMP.”
The core IMP components and other tightly integrated applications are implemented as separate modules. Outside layers of the messaging infrastructure merge into a single policy driven platform. This feature makes it possible for the IMP to offer reliability, scalability and flexibility.
“The need for processing the contents of every E-mail for spam and virus threats is minimal in the IMP because malicious traffic gets blocked early in the SMTP session,” states Ms. Rangan. “Spammers aiming to find functional mail addresses through harvest or directory attacks are identified and blocked by the IMP using multiple techniques. Clearly, the notable distinguishing feature of the IMP is its flexibility to combat threats posed both by the network and the content with a single box solution.”
The workflow policy processor at the core of the platform manages the message flow and applies rules at various stages of the SMTP session. Based on message content and context, the IMP can direct messaging traffic at the TCP and the SMTP levels and throttle the flow of messages. Its workflow policy processor further ensures the E-mail infrastructures don't get overloaded during virus outbreaks.
The event-based design and the adoption of asynchronous I/O in the IMP prevent the message stream from slowing down. Message movement in the memory remains at a minimal level using the “near-zero-copy” policy that makes sure that incoming messages are not copied until they are deleted or moved to a storage device.
Frost & Sullivan’s Excellence in Technology Award is presented to a company that pioneers the development of a technology that has either strongly influenced or has the potential to affect several market sectors. The Award recognises the company’s successful technology development that will make a significant contribution to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. It also recognises the overall technical excellence of a company and its commitment to technology innovation.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards honours companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technology innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
